Backdrops
You can have a character in front of a backdrop, with an image on it, to make it appear that the character is somewhere else.
When placing characters in front of a photographic backdrop, be careful that they don't cast shadows where they're not wanted - some types of backdrops are specifically set up not to show shadows, or you can change the lighting to not have shadows.
